England made 311 on slow Oval deck

Stokes made 89 to lift England to a challenging score.

Hosts and favourites England made a rather stuttered start to their World Cup campaign as they were restricted to 311 for 8 after being asked to bat first in the World Cup 2019 opener at the Kennington Oval England had found themselves in a strong position at 213 for 3 with Jason Roy, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes all making fifties. However, only Stokes went on to make a bigger contribution as England finished with a total they will be disappointed with. Lungi Ngidi was the most successful bowler for South Africa, overcoming two bad spells to take three wickets at the death.
